Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Attacked During ‘Jan Sunwai’; Accused in 5-Day Police Custody
Delhi Police have registered an attempt-to-murder FIR against Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakriya, 41, for attacking Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a weekly ‘Jan Sunwai’ at her residence on Wednesday. The accused allegedly handed over a paper to Gupta, slapped her, pulled her hair, and abused her before being overpowered by security personnel. He was later produced in court and remanded to five days of police custody.
Sakriya, a resident of Rajkot, Gujarat, reportedly has a prior criminal record, including cases of grievous hurt and intentional insult to provoke breach of peace, according to Delhi Police.
CM Gupta’s Reaction:
Describing the incident as a “cowardly attack on the government’s effort to serve Delhi,” she said the assault targeted not just her, but the administration’s public service initiatives.
Political Reactions:
The BJP alleged opposition conspiracy, while AAP and Congress condemned the attack, emphasizing that violence has no place in a democracy. Police continue to investigate the motive behind the assault and have assured strict action against the accused.
