South Africa Drop Tristan Stubbs, Ryan Rickelton from T20 World Cup Squad; Markram Named Captain.
South Africa have left Tristan Stubbs and Ryan Rickelton out of their 15-man squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, with Aiden Markram named captain for the tournament in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.
The Proteas’ selection panel opted for a mix of experience and youth. The squad features the return of Quinton de Kock, who recently came out of international retirement, and pacers Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada, both returning from injury. Other seam options include Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, and left-arm quick Kwena Maphaka.
Stubbs’ exclusion is a surprise, as he had been a key figure in South Africa’s white-ball plans, while Rickelton, along with Reeza Hendricks, Ottneil Baartman, and Lutho Sipamla, were also left out. The selectors appear to be prioritising a balance suited for subcontinent conditions.
“We have had to make some big calls, but we feel this group is the strongest and has every chance of succeeding in India and Sri Lanka,” said Proteas Men convenor Patrick Moroney. “We have assembled a squad blending experienced players with the best emerging T20 talent.”
Seven players earn maiden T20 World Cup call-ups: Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi, Donovan Ferreira, George Linde, Kwena Maphaka, and Jason Smith. Smith impressed in domestic cricket, including a 68 off 19 balls for the Dolphins and a quick 41 off 14 for MI Cape Town in the SA20.
South Africa are in Group D alongside Afghanistan, New Zealand, Canada, and the UAE, opening against Canada in Ahmedabad on February 9.
Still seeking their first T20 World Cup title, the Proteas retain seasoned campaigners such as De Kock, David Miller, and Keshav Maharaj. Head coach Shukri Conrad highlighted the squad’s recent exposure to subcontinent conditions as a key advantage:
“Many players selected were part of our recent tour in India. That experience will be invaluable ahead of the World Cup. We also have one more T20I series against the West Indies before departure, with that squad to be announced later this month.”
