AR Rahman Clarifies Remarks Amid Backlash: ‘Never Meant to Cause Pain’

Oscar-winning composer A R Rahman has addressed the controversy over his recent comments on Bollywood, saying his words were misunderstood and never intended to hurt anyone.

The row began after Rahman’s BBC Asian Network interview, where he reflected on receiving fewer Hindi film offers in recent years. He noted a shift in industry influence, commenting that people who are “not creative” now hold power, and added it “might be a communal thing.” The remarks sparked criticism on social media and from some film circles.

In a video on Instagram, Rahman clarified his intent, stressing that music has always been a tool to unite people and celebrate India’s cultural diversity.

“Music has always been my way of connecting, celebrating and honouring our culture. India is my inspiration, my teacher, and my home. I understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood, but my purpose has always been to uplift, honour, and serve through music. I have never wished to cause pain, and I hope my sincerity is felt,” he said.

He also highlighted the creative freedom India provides:

“I feel blessed to be Indian, which allows me to create spaces that celebrate multicultural voices and freedom of expression.”

Rahman listed projects reflecting this ethos: nurturing JHALAA at the Wave Summit, collaborating with Naga musicians on a string orchestra, mentoring the Sunshine Orchestra, building Secret Mountain, India’s first multicultural virtual band, and the honour of scoring Ramayana alongside Hans Zimmer.

The video ended with Rahman saying Jai Hind and a clip of the Indian cricket team’s 2023 World Cup win over Pakistan, where the crowd spontaneously sang his “Vande Mataram”, symbolising his enduring connection with India.
