The Hindi play LOI was staged to great acclaim at Mumbai’s renowned Veda Kunba Theatre, delivering a deeply moving and thought-provoking experience.
Written by noted poet and lyricist Pratap Somvanshi and directed by Akashaditya Lama, with Vikram TDR as co-director, the production brings to life the story of Loi — a fearless and rebellious woman from 15th-century Kashi, remembered largely as the companion of Saint Kabir.
However, the play moves beyond this limited historical framing to present Loi as a powerful and independent voice. It portrays her as a woman who boldly challenged patriarchy, religious orthodoxy, and caste discrimination. Inspired by Shekhar Sen’s acclaimed solo play Kabir, Somvanshi expands Loi’s character into a rich, layered narrative that stands firmly on its own.
The story captures Loi’s defiance against pundits, priests, and even Sultan Sikandar Lodi, as she speaks out for women’s rights and human dignity. One of the most striking elements of the play is her courage to question even Kabir’s own dohas when she finds them critical of women, adding depth and nuance to her character.
The climax unfolds in the court of Sikandar Lodi, where Loi delivers a powerful condemnation of the Hindu-Muslim divide and societal restrictions imposed on women. Her impassioned plea for humanity over religious divisions forms the emotional and ideological peak of the performance.

The cast delivers measured and compelling performances throughout. Actors including Vikram TDR, Mitali Nag, Mukul Nag, Aditi Mishra, Punesh Tripathi, Sohail Malia, and Mehreen Saba bring authenticity and depth to their roles. The actor portraying Loi stands out for capturing the character’s rebellious spirit, intellect, and compassion with remarkable sensitivity.
Akashaditya Lama’s direction ensures the narrative remains engaging while preserving its ideological intensity until the very end. The intimate setting of Veda Kunba Theatre enhances the experience, transporting the audience to the world of 15th-century Kashi. Somvanshi’s sharp and unapologetic dialogues resonate strongly, offering commentary that feels as relevant today as it would have been in the past.
The play was met with enthusiastic appreciation from Mumbai’s theatre community. More than just a historical retelling, LOI emerges as a mirror to contemporary society, delivering a powerful message of equality and humanity. The resounding applause at the end underscored its impact and success.
