With rain clouds looming over Delhi, Axar Patel took a calculated risk — one that ultimately unraveled as Delhi Capitals suffered an eight-wicket defeat to Chennai Super Kings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Indian Premier League 2026.
Toss call sets the tone
Opting to bat first on a surface expected to slow down looked logical on paper, but the execution fell short. At a venue where 170–180 is typically competitive, DC’s 156 lacked the cushion needed to challenge a seasoned CSK lineup.
Head coach Hemang Badani acknowledged as much, noting that while the pitch had its challenges, the total was below par. Axar echoed that sentiment after the match, admitting Delhi were at least 10–15 runs light — a shortfall that proved decisive.
Batting order confusion persists
Delhi’s bigger concern, however, continues to be their unsettled middle order. The combinations keep changing, but the results remain the same — inconsistency and stalled momentum. Karun Nair was again entrusted with the No. 3 role, but struggled to rotate strike or accelerate against spin, allowing CSK to tighten control through the middle overs.
In contrast, Sameer Rizvi — a more natural aggressor against spin — was held back and introduced late as an impact substitute. By the time he walked in, the innings had already drifted. His late flourish, alongside Tristan Stubbs and Ashutosh Sharma, helped Delhi reach a respectable total, but it felt more like damage control than a well-constructed innings.
Axar under pressure as captain
With results slipping, scrutiny around Axar’s captaincy is growing. There have been phases this season where Delhi appear reactive rather than in control — whether it’s delayed tactical changes, conservative field settings, or hesitation in key moments.
After starting strongly, DC have struggled to maintain rhythm, swinging between promise and underperformance. In a format as fast-paced as T20 cricket, that lack of clarity has been costly.
The road ahead
Delhi’s campaign is still alive, but only just. The gap for error is closing quickly, and the team needs sharper decision-making to stay in contention.
For Axar Patel, the challenge is clear: bring stability to the XI, back players in form, and show greater conviction in pressure situations. Because right now, more than opposition brilliance, it is uncertainty within that is holding Delhi Capitals back.
