Trump Says Energy, Immigration and Crime Contributed to Starmer’s Exit as Labour Leader
US President Donald Trump on Monday reacted to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s decision to step down as leader of the Labour Party, saying he wished the UK leader well but attributing his political troubles to issues including energy policy, immigration and crime.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump described Starmer as “a very nice man” and “a good friend,” while arguing that several policy decisions had weakened his standing with voters.
According to Trump, one of the key disagreements between the two leaders centred on Britain’s energy strategy. He criticized the UK’s emphasis on renewable energy projects and questioned restrictions on oil and gas exploration in the North Sea, suggesting that greater domestic energy production could have benefited the country.
The US president also pointed to immigration and crime as major challenges facing Starmer’s government, saying these issues had contributed to growing political pressure on the British leader.
Differences Over NATO and Security
Trump further claimed that he was dissatisfied with Starmer’s approach to certain NATO-related matters. He referred to discussions surrounding the use of British military facilities in Cyprus during US military operations in the Middle East, suggesting delays in decision-making had strained relations between the two allies.
Despite those disagreements, Trump stressed that he held no personal animosity toward the British prime minister and expressed hope for his future.
Starmer Announces Departure
Earlier on Monday, Keir Starmer announced that he would step down as Labour Party leader and prime minister after acknowledging that a significant section of the party no longer believed he was the right person to lead Labour into the next general election.
Starmer said he would remain in office until the party completes the process of selecting a new leader, ensuring continuity in government during the transition period.
Political Uncertainty Ahead
Starmer’s decision has opened a new chapter in British politics, with attention now turning to the contest to choose his successor. The leadership race is expected to shape the future direction of the Labour Party and determine how it responds to challenges including economic management, energy policy, immigration and public safety.
Trump’s remarks add an international dimension to the debate, highlighting how some of the issues dominating domestic politics in the UK continue to resonate beyond Britain’s borders.
