Fresh off defending their T20 World Cup title, India begin a new chapter in the shortest format under captain Shreyas Iyer.
When they take on Ireland in the opening T20I of the two-match series at Stormont in Belfast on Friday, June 26. While Iyer’s first assignment as India’s T20I captain marks the start of a new era following Suryakumar Yadav’s tenure, much of the pre-match buzz has centred around 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who could become one of India’s youngest international debutants if handed a cap.
The series offers India an opportunity to assess their leadership transition while integrating fresh faces into a squad that enters the contest as reigning world champions.
SHREYAS IYER’S FIRST TEST AS CAPTAIN
Iyer returns to India’s T20I setup after last featuring in the format against Australia in 2023. Rewarded for his impressive domestic and IPL performances, the Mumbai batter now has the responsibility of guiding a side that is expected to remain among the world’s best despite a change in leadership.
India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak backed Iyer’s credentials, pointing to his captaincy experience with Mumbai and in the IPL. “It’s not like Shreyas is captaining for the first time. He has led Mumbai and IPL teams, so he has plenty of experience,” Kotak said.
Kotak also revealed Iyer’s message to the squad during the team’s first huddle under his leadership. “I heard Shreyas saying, ‘We will look after everyone. Some will have good days, some will have bad days, so we will make sure we support each other.'”
VAIBHAV SOORYAVANSHI’S DEBUT IN FOCUS
Despite the captaincy change, the biggest talking point remains whether teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will make his international debut. However, Kotak hinted India are unlikely to alter a settled opening combination simply to accommodate the youngster.
“I don’t think that just to give him an opportunity, we should drop someone who has already been scoring runs. There is a very thin line between giving somebody an opportunity and being unfair to someone else,” he said.
Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker also praised the youngster ahead of the series.
“It’s pretty incredible for them to have a 15-year-old in their team. Credit to him—he’s a pretty special player,” Tucker said. He added that the Indian community in Ireland was eagerly awaiting the possibility of Sooryavanshi’s debut.
IRELAND AIM TO MAKE MOST OF HOME CONDITIONS
Ireland, too, are in transition under new captain Lorcan Tucker following Paul Stirling’s decision to step down after the T20 World Cup. Tucker remains Ireland’s biggest batting threat after his unbeaten 94 against Oman during the World Cup, while the hosts could hand debuts to teenager Reuben Wilson and Rajasthan-born left-arm pacer Jai Moondra.
PITCH AND WEATHER
The Stormont surface is expected to be slower than the batting-friendly pitches Indian players are accustomed to in the IPL, with large boundaries likely to reward disciplined bowling.
Cloudy skies and the possibility of intermittent showers could also influence the opening contest.
