Morning Stiffness? These Easy Stretches Can Help You Start the Day Better

Ease Into the Morning With Gentle Movement

Waking up feeling stiff can make it difficult to get moving comfortably. A short routine of gentle stretches and mobility exercises can help loosen the body and gradually prepare you for the day. Perform each movement slowly and stay within a comfortable range.

Neck Stretch

Sit or stand tall with your shoulders relaxed. Slowly turn your head towards the right, return to the centre and then turn towards the left. Keep the movement controlled and avoid forcing your neck.

Try: 3–5 slow repetitions on each side.

Shoulder Rolls

Relax your arms by your sides and slowly circle both shoulders forward. After several repetitions, reverse the direction.

Try: 5–10 circles in each direction. Keep the movement smooth rather than making large or forceful circles.

Standing Side Stretch

Stand with your feet about hip-width apart. Let your arms rest by your sides, then slowly slide your right hand down your right leg while gently lengthening the left side of your body. Return to the starting position and repeat on the other side.

Try: 3 repetitions per side.

Calf Stretch

Stand facing a wall and place your hands against it for support. Take one foot backwards, keeping the heel down and the back leg straight. Slowly bend the front knee until you feel a comfortable stretch in the calf. Switch legs and repeat.

Try: 3 gentle repetitions on each side.

Gentle Knee-to-Chest

Lie on your back in a comfortable position. Slowly bring one knee towards your chest and support it with your hands if needed. Hold briefly, then lower the leg and repeat with the other side.

Keep the movement comfortable rather than trying to pull the knee as close to your chest as possible.

Make Gentle Movement a Habit

The aim of a morning mobility routine is to gradually get your body moving, not to push through discomfort. Breathe normally, avoid bouncing and never force a stretch.

A few minutes of gentle movement may help you start the day feeling more mobile. If stiffness is persistent or accompanied by pain, swelling, redness or warmth, consider seeking medical advice.
