Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand scripted a historic comeback at the BWF World Championships on Friday, ending India’s 14-year wait for a women’s doubles medal.

The Indian duo fought back from a game down to defeat China’s fourth-seeded pair Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian 16-21, 21-15, 21-13 in a gripping quarter-final. The result guaranteed India a women’s doubles medal at the World Championships for the first time since Ashwini Ponnappa and Jwala Gutta won bronze in 2011. It also sent Jolly and Gopichand into the semi-finals of the prestigious tournament.

The achievement was particularly significant given the Indians’ record against their Chinese opponents. Jolly and Gopichand had lost all three of their previous meetings with Jia and Zhang before finally breaking that run on the biggest stage.

China Make Strong Start

The Chinese pair dominated the early exchanges, racing to a 4-0 advantage as the Indian combination struggled to find its footing.

Jia and Zhang maintained their lead despite India’s attempts to fight back. Treesa gradually became more effective at the net, while Gayatri began finding success with her attacking strokes.

India produced a six-point burst to reduce the deficit to 8-9, but China regained control and went into the interval 11-8 ahead. The Indians continued to compete strongly, yet the early setback proved costly as Jia and Zhang took the opening game 21-16.

  • India Change the Momentum
  • The second game brought a sharp turnaround.

Treesa and Gayatri immediately played with greater aggression and refused to let the Chinese pair dictate the pace. Long rallies became a feature of the contest, with both sides repeatedly pushing each other to the limit.

India edged ahead for the first time before the interval and began to build confidence. Even when China threatened to regain control, the Indians stayed patient and continued to attack.

A crucial 43-shot rally at 15-14 went India’s way, giving them a vital lift at the business end of the game. They capitalised on the momentum to win 21-15 and take the match into a decider.

Historic Decider

The third game remained competitive in its early stages, but the Indians looked increasingly assured.

With the home crowd loudly backing them, Jolly and Gopichand handled the pressure better than they had in the opening game. They kept rallies under control, defended China’s attacks and created openings with their own aggressive play.

The fourth seeds struggled to find a response as India moved clear in the closing stages. Jolly and Gopichand completed the comeback with a 21-13 win in the decider. The victory ended India’s 14-year wait for a women’s doubles medal at the World Championships and marked a breakthrough for Jolly and Gopichand.

Having overcome three previous defeats against Jia and Zhang, the Indian pair now have the opportunity to go beyond the bronze-medal guarantee and challenge for a place in the World Championships final.
