At least 27 people were killed and dozens injured after Russian drone strikes triggered a massive explosion at a warehouse near Kyiv, according to a CNN report.
The blast caused extensive damage in the surrounding area and prompted Ukrainian authorities to launch an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. Ukrainian officials said the explosion occurred after Russian drones struck the warehouse. The incident also sparked concerns over the storage of ammunition and other potentially dangerous material near residential areas.
Death Toll Could Rise
Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv region military administration, said at least 27 people had died following the blast. He warned that the toll could rise as rescue and recovery operations continue.
Tkachenko expressed condolences to the families of those killed, while dozens of others were reportedly wounded in the explosion.
The blast caused significant destruction around the warehouse, damaging nearby structures and leaving emergency teams responding to the aftermath.
Zelensky Orders Probe
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said an investigation would be conducted to establish exactly what happened at the site. Zelensky questioned why ammunition and other hazardous material was being stored close to residential areas. He stressed that such material should not be kept near homes because of the potential danger to civilians.
The investigation is expected to examine the storage conditions at the warehouse and the sequence of events that led to the deadly explosion.
Russia Gives Different Account
Russia’s Defence Ministry offered a different description of the facility, saying its forces had targeted an arms depot containing equipment used in the production of drones. Moscow described the site as a military-related storage facility, while Ukrainian authorities said Russian drone strikes hit a warehouse and triggered the explosion.
The conflicting accounts could not immediately be independently verified.
The incident comes as fighting between Russia and Ukraine continues, with attacks involving drones remaining a major feature of the conflict. The high number of casualties in the Kyiv-area explosion has made it one of the most serious incidents reported in the latest wave of attacks.
