US President Donald Trump’s hair has once again become a subject of intense online discussion after he stepped off Air Force One in Morristown, New Jersey, on Friday with a noticeably darker hairstyle.
The new look was markedly different from Trump’s familiar blond comb-over and came just days after he publicly denied wearing a wig at a White House dinner. During the September 2 Rose Garden dinner, Trump recalled a windy 2024 campaign rally in Ohio for Republican Senate candidate Bernie Moreno. He pointed to the strong winds that night as proof that his hair was real, revisiting a claim he has made repeatedly over the years.
Trump has previously addressed questions about his hair at public events. During a 2015 rally, he tugged at it while telling the crowd it was genuine. At the 2018 Conservative Political Action Conference, he also joked about trying to hide his bald spot.
His latest appearance, however, reignited the debate on X. Social media users quickly began comparing the darker hairstyle with the looks of a 1970s game-show host, actor Robert Redford and former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Some users speculated that the change may simply have been the result of a rushed styling or colouring job. Others suggested Trump may have deliberately altered his appearance following criticism of his hair online.
One user described the president as having moved away from his usual “surfer look” and adopted a brunette appearance, while another claimed the hairstyle was intended to distract from other online criticism.
None of the social media speculation establishes that Trump wears a wig.
Trump biographer Michael Wolff has previously made claims about the president’s hair routine, saying Trump travels with hair pieces in different shades and has a dedicated aide who looks after them while he is on the road. Wolff has also said Trump does much of the styling himself.
In an earlier book about the Trump White House, Wolff recalled Ivanka Trump describing how she would tease, pull and fluff her father’s hair to shape it.
Trump’s hair has also been discussed by his former physician, Harold Bornstein. In 2017, Bornstein told The New York Times that Trump used a medication commonly prescribed for male-pattern hair loss.
The topic resurfaced in August when comedian Rosie O’Donnell joked that Trump should “hang up your wig”, in a remark involving White House aide Natalie Harp.
While Trump’s latest darker hairstyle has generated plenty of theories online, the reactions remain speculation. There is no confirmation from the social media debate itself that the president wears a wig.
