Devdutt Padikkal’s Magnificent 199 Puts India A in Command After Stunning Comeback

Devdutt Padikkal delivered a batting masterclass in windy Lincoln on Monday, October 26, smashing a brilliant 199 to help India A seize control on Day 3 of the first unofficial Test against New Zealand A.

Starting the day unbeaten on 56, Padikkal continued to dominate the opposition bowlers and came within touching distance of a memorable double century. However, his innings ended just one run short of the landmark when he edged a delivery from fast bowler Zak Gibson down the leg side, shortly before the Tea break.

The dismissal left Padikkal visibly disappointed. He appeared to question the umpire’s decision before walking back to the pavilion, gesturing that there was considerable distance between his bat and the ball.

The left-hander’s outstanding knock came off 248 deliveries, including 24 fours and three sixes, at a strike rate of 80.24. His innings proved decisive in India’s fightback after the visitors had endured a difficult opening two days.

India A were dismissed for a meagre 113 in their first innings, allowing New Zealand A to establish a significant advantage with 317 runs. Facing a challenging situation, the visitors needed a substantial batting effort in their second innings, and Padikkal led the recovery with remarkable composure and attacking intent.

Despite the windy conditions, Padikkal looked in complete control, frequently driving through the covers and taking on New Zealand A’s pace attack with confidence. His ability to find gaps and maintain a steady scoring rate kept the hosts under pressure.

Sai Sudharsan played a crucial supporting role, joining Padikkal in a match-defining partnership worth 215 runs. Sudharsan, who had missed a century by just one run in the opening tour match, was eventually dismissed by Kristian Clarke in the 62nd over.

Padikkal then combined with Yash Rathod to continue India’s revival. The pair added 142 runs off 142 balls, pushing India’s lead beyond 150 runs and strengthening the visitors’ position in the match.

The recovery was especially impressive given India’s disastrous start on Day 2, when both openers fell within the first five overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal was caught off a bouncer, while KL Rahul was bowled after the ball struck his stumps as he attempted to play it.

Padikkal Makes His Mark in Test Cricket

Padikkal’s impressive innings in Lincoln has further strengthened his reputation as a promising red-ball batter. Since returning to India’s Test setup during the Sri Lanka series, he has maintained a consistent run-scoring record.

The left-hander initially found himself outside India’s first-choice plans but received an opportunity after Sudharsan suffered an injury in August. He made the most of his chances, displaying sound technique and the patience required for Test cricket.

His performances against spin during the two-match series against Sri Lanka showcased his ability to handle challenging bowling. His latest effort against New Zealand A’s fast bowlers has demonstrated that his strengths extend beyond spin-friendly conditions.

While falling one run short of a double century was a bitter disappointment, Padikkal’s magnificent 199 has transformed India A’s position and given the visitors a strong platform to push for a positive result.
