Earthquake Of Magnitude 5.0 Hits China’s Xinjiang, Tremors Felt In Ladakh And Jammu & Kashmir

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake shook China’s Xinjiang region late Thursday night, with tremors reportedly reaching parts of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. The earthquake, which occurred close to the India-China border, was recorded by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

According to the NCS, the earthquake struck at 10:26 pm IST on November 5, 2026. The seismic event occurred at a depth of 164 kilometres, with its epicentre located at latitude 35.587° North and longitude 78.130° East in China’s Xinjiang region.

Tremors were reportedly felt in parts of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir following the earthquake. However, the extent of its impact remains unclear, and authorities are yet to confirm any damage.

No casualties or structural damage had been reported immediately after the tremor. Further updates are awaited.

China Recently Witnessed A Deadly 7.0-Magnitude Earthquake

The latest earthquake comes after a powerful 7.0-magnitude tremor struck China’s Tibet region, killing at least 16 people and leaving 32 others injured, according to state-run news agency Xinhua.

The earthquake caused more than 300 houses to collapse and disrupted electricity and telecommunications services across affected areas. Emergency response teams were mobilised to conduct rescue operations and provide assistance to residents.

The epicentre was located in Maru township in Baqen county, while the earthquake originated at a shallow depth of around 10 kilometres.

Tibet Has A History Of Destructive Earthquakes

China’s western regions are particularly vulnerable to earthquakes because of their location in an active tectonic zone. Tibet has experienced several powerful seismic events over the years.

In January 2025, a major earthquake struck Tingri county in Tibet, claiming at least 126 lives and causing extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure.

The latest tremor in Xinjiang adds to concerns over seismic activity across the Himalayan belt and adjoining regions, including areas close to India’s Ladakh territory.
