Indian-Origin Nithya Raman Ousts Karen Bass In Los Angeles Mayoral Race, Promises Major Reforms
Nithya Raman, an India-born Los Angeles City Council member backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, has defeated incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in a stunning electoral upset. Her victory marks a significant political shift in America’s second-largest city and reflects growing voter support for candidates challenging established Democratic leadership.
At 45, Raman’s rise represents a generational change in Los Angeles politics. Her success also follows the growing prominence of democratic socialist leaders across the country, including Zohran Mamdani, who won New York’s mayoral election last year.
Raman’s entry into the mayoral contest was particularly unexpected as she had initially endorsed Bass. However, citing what she described as a city in crisis, she changed course and launched her own campaign shortly before the nomination deadline.
Bass’s defeat makes her the first Los Angeles mayor in two decades to lose a re-election campaign. Her administration faced intense scrutiny over its handling of the devastating Palisades Fire, which erupted while she was travelling abroad. Questions surrounding emergency preparedness and the city’s response to the disaster became major concerns among voters.
Homelessness And Public Safety Dominate Raman’s Agenda
Tackling homelessness was among the central promises of Raman’s campaign. She criticised the existing administration’s approach, arguing that it had failed to deliver meaningful improvements despite substantial public spending.
Her proposed strategy includes expanding medical outreach teams to work directly with people living on streets and in homeless encampments. These teams would aim to build relationships, provide healthcare assistance and help individuals transition into indoor accommodation.
Raman also wants to expand housing options to reduce the city’s dependence on hotels used to accommodate homeless residents.
She has pledged to reduce the number of people living in tents and encampments by at least half by 2028, when Los Angeles will host the Olympic Games.
Public safety and policing are also expected to feature prominently in her administration. Raman has indicated that she wants to replace the city’s police chief, whom she considers too accommodating towards federal immigration authorities.
Improving basic civic facilities, including repairing potholes, cleaning neighbourhoods, fixing damaged sidewalks and restoring streetlights, is another priority.
Raman Defeats A Candidate Backed By Top Democratic Leaders
Raman’s victory came despite Bass enjoying considerable support from prominent Democratic figures, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, former Vice President Kamala Harris and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Bass, who became mayor in 2022 after serving in the state Legislature and US Congress, also received backing from nearly all members of the Los Angeles City Council.
Billionaire property developer Rick Caruso, who had previously contested the mayoral election against Bass in 2022, also indicated that he would vote for her, although he stopped short of formally endorsing her.
Raman built her campaign around support from progressive organisations and political groups, including Our Revolution, founded by Senator Bernie Sanders, and the Sierra Club.
Despite limited endorsements from prominent local politicians, she managed to attract voters frustrated with persistent problems in the city.
During the campaign, Bass questioned Raman’s experience and described her positions on policing and homelessness as extreme. Raman, however, presented herself as an alternative to the existing political establishment.
Who Is Nithya Raman?
A trained urban planner, Raman has been a member of the Los Angeles City Council and built her political profile around housing, urban development and neighbourhood issues.
Her victory now places her in charge of a major American city with approximately 3.8 million residents and a diverse economic landscape spanning entertainment, tourism, shipping, education and research.
She will also face the challenge of building working relationships with business leaders, public institutions and political stakeholders.
Raman previously held a widely publicised private meeting with former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, signalling efforts to expand her network beyond progressive political circles.
With the 2028 Olympics approaching, her administration will face considerable pressure to address homelessness, improve public infrastructure and strengthen essential city services.
