Abbas Araghchi Expected to Visit New Delhi for BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is likely to visit New Delhi on May 14-15 for the upcoming BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Iranian sources.

The proposed visit is expected to be closely watched diplomatically as it would be Araghchi’s first trip to India since the escalation of the ongoing West Asia conflict, which has triggered heightened tensions across the region and renewed international diplomatic outreach.

Sources said Iran considers BRICS an increasingly important global platform and has ensured senior-level participation in all major meetings since formally joining the expanded grouping. Tehran is also understood to be pushing for a more active role for BRICS under India’s presidency amid the current regional crisis. The matter had reportedly come up during Araghchi’s earlier discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

According to Iranian government statements issued at the time, Araghchi had emphasised that multilateral forums such as BRICS should play a constructive role in strengthening regional and global stability during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.

Iran’s outreach is being viewed as strategically significant given BRICS’ expanded composition, which now includes influential regional and global powers such as India, China, Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The grouping’s growing influence comes at a time when diplomatic alignments in West Asia are under increased scrutiny amid recent regional tensions and US military involvement.

India, which currently holds the BRICS presidency, is set to host the foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi ahead of the bloc’s annual summit later this year. Against the backdrop of the continuing crisis in West Asia, Iran’s engagement with India is being seen as part of a broader attempt to use multilateral platforms to shape discussions around regional security and geopolitical stability.
