Abhishek Sharma Leads India to Dominant Win Over Afghanistan, India Go 1-0 Up in Delhi T20I

India opened their T20I series against Afghanistan with a statement seven-wicket victory in Delhi, chasing down 157 with 38 balls to spare.

Abhishek Sharma produced a stunning 82 off just 32 deliveries, while India’s bowlers combined to restrict Afghanistan to 156. Although Afghanistan were the designated home side for the historic series opener, India quickly established their authority at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The win gave Shreyas Iyer’s team a 1-0 lead in the series.

ABHISHEK PRODUCES A BLISTERING RESPONSE

The biggest selection question before the match involved Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. India opted to leave the teenager out and backed their T20 World Cup-winning combination of Samson and Abhishek.

Abhishek entered the contest under pressure after failing to score a fifty in his previous nine innings. With competition for batting places intensifying, another quiet outing could have put his position under serious scrutiny.

Instead, he delivered one of his most destructive T20 innings.

The left-hander attacked from the first over, launching Fazalhaq Farooqi over the boundary and continuing to dominate Afghanistan’s attack. He brought up his fifty in only 22 balls and finished with 82 from 32, smashing seven fours and seven sixes.

Neither pace nor spin could contain him. Abhishek took apart Afghanistan’s four-pronged spin attack, scoring 46 runs from only 20 balls against them and repeatedly targeting the short boundaries.

SAMSON’S COMEBACK ENDS EARLY

Sanju Samson had an opportunity to make an immediate impact after being left out of India’s Zimbabwe tour. However, his return ended with just 10 runs. Samson looked dangerous briefly but once again opted for an aggressive flick early in his innings and picked out the deep mid-wicket fielder.

His dismissal did little to slow India down.

Abhishek joined forces with Ishan Kishan to completely take the game away from Afghanistan. The pair added 121 runs from 53 balls, with Kishan also maintaining a strike rate above 150.

Kishan eventually fell for 42 off 33, but by then India needed only a handful of runs. Abhishek departed for 82 shortly afterwards, with Nabi getting him with a full toss, but the damage was already done.

Tilak Varma and Shreyas Iyer finished the chase as India reached 157 for three in only 13.4 overs.

BUMRAH STRIKES ON RETURN

India’s victory was set up by a disciplined bowling display that reduced Afghanistan to 156.

Jasprit Bumrah made an immediate impact on his return from injury, dismissing Rahmanullah Gurbaz with just his second legal delivery. His extra bounce and tight line proved too much for the Afghanistan opener.

The wickets kept coming.

Ibrahim Zadran was run out following sharp fielding from Ishan Kishan, while Sediqullah Atal and Gulbadin Naib also departed cheaply. Varun Chakravarthy then bowled Darwish Rasooli as Afghanistan slipped to 43 for five.

India’s fielding showed marked improvement as they converted pressure into two run-outs, although the bowling of their pace-bowling all-rounders remained a concern.

Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shivam Dube conceded 51 runs between them in three overs, with Dube’s final over costing 21.

ARSHDEEP LEADS THE BOWLING ATTACK

Afghanistan desperately needed a partnership and found one through Mohammad Nabi and Azmatullah Omarzai. The experienced pair added 83 runs for the sixth wicket in 9.2 overs, with Nabi rotating the strike and Omarzai taking responsibility for the scoring.

Arshdeep Singh eventually ended the stand in the 17th over and finished with the best figures of the Indian attack, taking 3/19 in four overs. Bumrah then tightened the screws at the death, conceding only three runs and keeping Rashid Khan quiet. The Afghanistan captain managed just one run from 10 balls before Arshdeep dismissed him in the next over.

Omarzai’s unbeaten 64 off 44 balls helped Afghanistan reach 156, but it was nowhere near enough on a good batting surface.

Afghanistan will have another chance to fight back in the second T20I on Tuesday. Having never beaten India in the format, they now need a significant improvement if they are to level the series.
