Festive Season Fitness: 8 Simple Exercises From Squats To Walking To Keep You Active

4

Festive celebrations can make it difficult to stick to a regular workout routine. Between family gatherings, travelling, shopping and late-night celebrations, exercise often gets pushed aside.

The good news is that you do not need a gym or lengthy workout sessions to keep moving. Simple bodyweight exercises and everyday activities can help you stay active, improve strength and support mobility even when your schedule is packed.

1. Squats

Squats are an easy lower-body exercise that can be performed almost anywhere. They work several muscles around the thighs, hips and legs. Begin with bodyweight squats and focus on maintaining controlled movements before gradually increasing repetitions.

2. Brisk Walking

A walk can be one of the simplest ways to stay active during the festive season. Aim for a brisk 20-30-minute walk when possible. If your schedule is tight, divide your walking into several shorter sessions throughout the day.

3. Lunges

Lunges can strengthen your legs while supporting balance and coordination. Step forward with one foot, lower your body while keeping your torso upright, then push back to the starting position. Alternate legs and perform the movement at a comfortable pace.

4. Wall Push-Ups

Wall push-ups are a beginner-friendly option for those who find traditional push-ups difficult. Stand a short distance from a wall, place your hands against it and bend your elbows to bring your body closer. Push away from the wall to return to the starting position.

5. Glute Bridges

Glute bridges are useful for working the glutes, hips and lower-body muscles. Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Lift your hips slowly, pause for a moment and lower them back down with control.

6. Planks

Planks can be added to a quick home workout to engage the core. If you are new to the exercise, begin with a 15-20-second hold and gradually increase the duration. Keep your body stable and stop if you feel discomfort.

7. Calf Raises

Calf raises require minimal space and can be done almost anytime. Stand upright, slowly lift your heels so you are on your toes, pause briefly and return to the starting position. Hold onto a wall or sturdy chair if you need extra balance.

8. Stretching

Do not overlook flexibility while focusing on exercise. Gentle stretches involving the neck, shoulders, back and legs can help you stay mobile, particularly after long hours of sitting, travelling or working.

During the festive season, the goal does not have to be an intense workout every day. Making small amounts of movement part of your routine can help you stay active without taking away from the celebrations. Listen to your body, progress gradually and give yourself enough time to rest and recover.
