How Pakistan Scare Fueled India’s Asian Games Final Triumph Over Malaysia
India’s hard-fought semifinal against Pakistan proved to be the perfect wake-up call before the men’s hockey final, with head coach Craig Fulton saying the thriller helped his team find the right mindset to overpower Malaysia and retain the Asian Games title.
India secured a second consecutive Asian Games gold medal with a commanding 5-1 victory over Malaysia. The triumph also booked their direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The final was in stark contrast to the semifinal, when India appeared to be cruising after establishing a 3-0 lead against Pakistan. The arch-rivals, however, mounted a stunning comeback to make it 3-3 before Abhishek struck the winning goal to send India into the final.
Fulton felt the dramatic contest was exactly what his players needed.
“We almost needed that semifinal to get into this mindset,” Fulton said after India’s victory, according to PTI.
‘We Were Honest After the Semifinal’
India’s performance against Pakistan exposed defensive lapses and allowed their opponents to build momentum. Fulton admitted that the pressure surrounding the high-profile clash may have affected his players.
The coaching staff held an open and honest review after the match, urging the team to concentrate on its own game, increase the tempo and play without hesitation.
“We just had to focus on ourselves and our basic game plan but do it at tempo and have no fear. Suddenly, it started to click and off we went again,” Fulton said.
The coach also pointed out how quickly Pakistan had capitalised on India’s mistakes.
“If we didn’t get to four and five goals and then you make one or two mistakes, Pakistan can get their tail up and they can play and they can score goals,” he said.
For Fulton, escaping that semifinal with a victory was crucial.
“I’m glad we found a way to win that game because that was the difference and I think that helped us in this final,” he added.
Asian Games Gold Was the 2026 Target
India’s victory over Malaysia achieved more than just another continental title. It secured the team’s automatic qualification for the 2028 Olympics. The achievement was particularly important after India’s disappointing World Cup campaign, where they finished eighth.
Fulton said the Asian Games had always been central to India’s plans for 2026.
“That was the main goal of 2026. Had we won the World Cup we still would have had to come here and play. Obviously the World Cup didn’t go the way we wanted it to. I’m glad we dominated in Asia and this was important for us,” he said.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh led the way in the final with two goals as India produced a vastly more controlled display than they had in the semifinal.
After successfully defending their Asian Games crown, India’s next assignment will be the Asian Champions Trophy, which begins later this month in Punjab.
