India suffered a 0-2 defeat against reigning champions Netherlands in the Women’s Hockey World Cup in Amstelveen, leaving their hopes of reaching the semi-finals in serious danger.
Penalty-corner goals from Yibbi Jansen and Frederique Matla secured the Netherlands’ victory, while India remained on one point in their group. The Dutch, chasing a third successive World Cup title, strengthened their position at the top and moved closer to the semi-finals.
India’s final Phase Two match against Australia on Sunday, August 23, has now become a must-win encounter for Sjoerd Marijne’s side.
Netherlands Dominate From The Start
The Netherlands wasted little time establishing control. They earned their first penalty corner in the second minute, with Yibbi Jansen making no mistake to put the hosts ahead. India struggled to cope with the Dutch press and quick passing. Another penalty corner arrived just minutes later, but goalkeeper Bichu Devi produced a fine save to deny Jansen.
The hosts continued to create chances, making repeated circle entries while India struggled to build meaningful attacks. Jansen came close to scoring again when her penalty-corner effort struck the post. India finally entered the Dutch circle in the ninth minute, but their shot was off target.
India Show More Fight In Second Quarter
India improved their possession in the second quarter and managed to create some opportunities. They earned two penalty corners, but Deepika could not convert either as the Netherlands’ defence held firm.
The Dutch soon regained control and resumed their relentless pressure.
Savita, who came on in goal, was called into action several times. She made a crucial save with her body to stop Felice Albers before producing another excellent intervention to keep out Pien Dicke.
Despite spending long periods under pressure, India went into half-time just one goal behind.
Matla Puts Netherlands In Control
India began the second half with more attacking intent. After successfully defending another Dutch penalty corner, they launched a quick counter-attack, but Sunelita Toppo’s effort was blocked.
The promising spell did not last long.
In the 38th minute, Frederique Matla converted another penalty corner to double the Netherlands’ lead and put India in a difficult position. India continued to search for a way back but struggled to create enough clear-cut chances. The Dutch defence remained organised, while their attack continued to threaten on the counter.
Dicke hit the post as the Netherlands pushed for a third, while Savita made further saves to prevent the deficit from growing. India’s best opportunity came late in the match when Navneet’s effort was stopped by Dutch goalkeeper Anne Veenendaal.
Australia Clash Now Crucial
The Netherlands ultimately secured a comfortable 2-0 victory, extending their impressive run in the tournament. For India, the defeat exposed areas that still require improvement, particularly passing, fitness and attacking confidence. Yet their defensive resilience ensured they remained in the contest until the final stages.
With just one point from their campaign so far, India now have little margin for error. Their final Phase Two clash against Australia on Sunday will be crucial, with victory needed to keep their hopes of a place in the semi-finals alive.
