Iran Claims Strikes on US Vessels, Tankers and Ships Across Gulf, Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have claimed that they attacked two US vessels and eight oil tankers in the Gulf, in retaliation for US strikes on five Iranian oil tankers.

Iranian state media, citing an IRGC statement, also reported that the group attacked a ship attempting to cross what it described as a “prohibited and unsafe” area of the Strait of Hormuz.

US says five Iranian tankers destroyed

The US military said it destroyed five Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday, September 8, following attacks by Tehran on US warships.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeted a US Navy warship with ballistic missiles twice over two days.

The vessels named by CENTCOM were M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1 and M/T Riesco in the Gulf of Oman, and M/T Derya near Kharg Island.

Rubio threatens further action

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that Washington would continue striking Iranian oil tankers if Tehran keeps targeting US naval vessels.

“Iran continues to try to hit US naval ships, and for every time they do that or try to do that, they’re going to lose tankers,” Rubio told reporters during a visit to Colombia.

The warning comes as the confrontation between Washington and Tehran intensifies, with attacks on military and commercial vessels raising concerns over shipping security in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

Jordan intercepts Iranian missiles

Iran also launched retaliatory strikes targeting US bases in Jordan following the American attacks.

Jordanian air-defence systems intercepted 18 of 20 ballistic missiles launched from Iran, the country’s state news agency reported, citing the armed forces.

• The remaining two missiles fell in unpopulated areas, and no casualties were reported.
• Israel orders British diplomats to leave

Separately, Israel has informed the British consulate in East Jerusalem that it must close, while diplomats there will reportedly lose their accreditation within 30 days, according to Reuters.

British representatives involved in a US-led Gaza coordination mission in Israel, along with British diplomats based in Ramallah, have reportedly been given seven days to leave.

Over 1,000 UK flights cancelled

More than 1,000 flights across the UK were cancelled on Tuesday following a technical problem at the country’s air traffic control provider NATS.

Flight-tracking platform Flightradar24 reported widespread delays and cancellations at airports across Britain. NATS later said engineers had identified and fixed the problem, although disruption was expected to continue as airlines worked through the backlog.

Trump praises Germany’s AfD

US President Donald Trump meanwhile praised what he described as a “really big” victory for Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).

In a Truth Social post, Trump attributed the party’s rise to opposition to Germany’s immigration policies and said the AfD was “on the rise.”

Strait of Hormuz in focus

The latest Iran-US confrontation has put the Strait of Hormuz under renewed scrutiny. Any sustained disruption to shipping through the strategic waterway could have significant consequences for global oil supplies and crude prices.

With both sides threatening further retaliation, tensions remain high across the Gulf.
