Pezeshkian to Attend BRICS Summit in India as Iran-US Tensions Escalate

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to visit New Delhi in September to attend the 18th BRICS Summit, with his visit coming against the backdrop of heightened tensions between Iran and the United States and growing instability in West Asia.

India will host the summit under its BRICS presidency, providing an important platform for Tehran to engage with New Delhi and other member countries on regional and global issues.

Pezeshkian-Modi Talks in Focus

According to Iranian sources, Pezeshkian will travel to India for the summit and is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two leaders last held talks on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024.

Their expected meeting could provide an opportunity to discuss the state of India-Iran relations as well as the rapidly evolving situation in West Asia. The visit comes amid heightened security concerns around the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial international shipping route, following an attack involving sailors in the region.

Iran Highlights India’s Role

Tehran has repeatedly described India as an important partner and has welcomed New Delhi’s emphasis on dialogue and diplomacy in addressing regional conflicts.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi visited New Delhi in May for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. During the visit, he said Iran attaches significant importance to its relationship with India and indicated that New Delhi could play a constructive role in supporting peace efforts in West Asia.

Iran joined BRICS as a full member in 2024, alongside Egypt, Ethiopia and the UAE. Indonesia became the grouping’s 11th full member in 2025.

India Pushes for Dialogue

Prime Minister Modi has expressed deep concern over the continuing conflict in West Asia and the civilian casualties resulting from the violence. India has maintained that all sides should give priority to diplomacy and dialogue to resolve outstanding issues.

Pezeshkian’s September visit could therefore become an important diplomatic engagement, with India-Iran ties, regional security and efforts to ease West Asia tensions likely to feature prominently in discussions.
