T20 World Champions India Stunned as Ireland Complete Historic 2-0 Series Sweep
Ireland produced the biggest result in their T20I history on Sunday, defeating reigning T20 World Cup champions India by one run in Belfast to complete a sensational 2-0 series whitewash. Having secured their maiden international victory over India in the opening match, the hosts backed it up with another inspired performance to seal their first-ever bilateral series win against the cricketing giants.
The defeat brought an abrupt end to India’s remarkable run of 16 consecutive bilateral T20I series victories, while Ireland celebrated one of the greatest achievements in the country’s sporting history. Despite missing several first-choice players, the Irish side outplayed the world champions across both matches with disciplined cricket and fearless execution.
Moondra’s Triple Blow Leaves India Reeling
Chasing 155 for victory, India were rocked almost immediately by left-arm pacer Jai Moondra, who enjoyed a dream series debut. The youngster struck twice in the opening over to remove Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma for golden ducks before returning to dismiss captain Shreyas Iyer, reducing India to 19/3.
Ireland tightened their grip further when Ross Adair produced a brilliant direct hit to run out Ishan Kishan, leaving India struggling at 35/4 with the chase rapidly slipping away.
Tilak Varma and Axar Patel steadied the innings through a crucial rebuilding partnership. Tilak mixed caution with controlled aggression to bring up a fighting half-century, but his dismissal shortly after reaching the milestone handed Ireland the initiative once again.
Harshit Rana threatened to script an incredible escape act in the closing stages, smashing boundaries to leave India needing just eight runs from the final two balls. However, his dismissal off the penultimate delivery ended India’s hopes as Harry Tector kept his composure to seal a dramatic one-run victory.
Tector Anchors Ireland’s Innings
Earlier, Ireland recovered from a difficult start to post a competitive 154/8 after choosing to bat.
India’s seamers dominated the first half of the innings, with Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana and debutant Prince Yadav exploiting the helpful conditions to reduce the hosts to 58/3 after ten overs.
Harry Tector then produced a captain’s knock in his 100th T20I, compiling a patient 53 off 47 deliveries, while Ben Calitz injected momentum with a brisk 37 off 23 balls. Their 65-run partnership lifted Ireland towards a competitive total before India struck back late.
Shivam Dube removed both set batters in the same over, while Prince Yadav impressed on debut with figures of 3/22. Arshdeep picked up two wickets as India appeared to have restricted Ireland to a below-par score.
Ireland Complete Historic Triumph
Ireland’s bowlers ensured the modest target proved more than enough.
Moondra finished with outstanding figures of 3/32 after dismantling India’s top order, while Mathew Hollard, Matthew Humphreys and Liam McCarthy maintained relentless pressure through the middle and death overs. Humphreys’ wicket of Shivam Dube and Adair’s direct-hit run-out of Ishan Kishan proved decisive moments in the contest.
The victory was all the more remarkable given Ireland were without experienced campaigners Paul Stirling, Mark Adair, Curtis Campher and Joshua Little. Even so, the hosts outplayed India in every department across the series to complete a famous clean sweep.
For India, the defeat ended a dominant chapter in T20I cricket, snapping a 16-series winning streak and highlighting concerns surrounding their top-order batting and finishing ability.
For Ireland, meanwhile, June 2026 will forever be remembered as the month they defeated the reigning T20 world champions twice and completed the most memorable bilateral series triumph in the nation’s cricketing history.
