Europe Heatwave Intensifies: Italy Issues Red Alert, France Braces for Wildfires

A severe heatwave swept across large parts of Europe on Sunday, pushing temperatures close to 40°C and prompting authorities to issue health and safety warnings. The extreme weather disrupted transport services, affected wildlife, and created challenging conditions at several popular tourist destinations.

In Italy, officials declared a red alert in eight cities after temperatures remained above 35°C for several consecutive days. Residents and visitors were urged to limit outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours and stay hydrated.

France has placed emergency responders and military personnel on heightened alert amid growing concerns over wildfires. Authorities also cancelled some outdoor sporting events due to the intense heat. Ahead of the country’s annual Music Day celebrations, public alcohol consumption was restricted in several areas to help reduce pressure on emergency services.

Weather agencies warned that temperatures could touch 40°C in parts of France, with red alerts covering nearly a third of the country.

Germany has also felt the impact of the heatwave, with temperatures climbing to 38°C. Forecasters warned of severe thunderstorms in eastern regions, including the capital, Berlin, as unstable weather conditions accompany the soaring heat.

In Spain, temperatures reached 40°C, causing discomfort for both residents and tourists. Authorities advised people to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and issued alerts over the heightened risk of forest fires as dry conditions persist.

The latest heatwave is part of a broader spell of extreme weather affecting several European countries, raising concerns over public health, wildfire outbreaks and pressure on emergency services.
