PBKS Hunt Down 220, Spoil Abhishek Sharma’s Heroics Against SRH

Fifties from Prabhsimran Singh, Priyansh Arya and Shreyas Iyer powered Punjab Kings to a statement six-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad, as they chased down 220 to continue their unbeaten start in Indian Premier League 2026.

In a contest dominated by two explosive top orders, it was Punjab’s control through the middle and composure at the finish that proved decisive.

SRH fly, then stall

For eight overs, the game belonged entirely to Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head.

Abhishek set the tone with a blistering 18-ball fifty, taking apart anything remotely loose while maintaining remarkable control. Head settled in alongside him before joining the onslaught, as the pair put together a 120-run opening stand that left PBKS searching for answers.

SRH surged to 105/0 in the Powerplay — among the highest in IPL history — and reached 120 without loss in eight overs, seemingly on course for a 230-plus total.

  • But the innings unravelled just as quickly.
  • Shashank’s double blow shifts momentum
  • The turning point came via Shashank Singh.

Introduced to slow things down, he first delivered a quiet over before returning to remove both openers in the ninth. That double strike transformed the contest. From total dominance, SRH were forced into a rebuild they never quite managed.

Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen struggled to find fluency, while PBKS’ bowlers mixed their lengths smartly and executed well at the death.

From 120/0, SRH managed only 99 runs in the last 12 overs to finish on 219 — a strong total, but one that felt underwhelming given their start.

  • PBKS match the intent
  • Punjab’s response was immediate and emphatic.

Arya set the tone with 18 runs off the opening over and raced to a stunning 16-ball fifty, putting SRH under pressure straightaway. Prabhsimran matched that aggression with calculated strokeplay, ensuring the asking rate never spiralled.

Their 99-run opening stand effectively neutralised the target, with PBKS reaching 93/0 in the Powerplay and taking control of the chase.

Iyer anchors, PBKS finish strong

A brief window opened when Shivang Kumar struck thrice to reduce PBKS to 128/3.

But Iyer shut it just as quickly.

Measured and assured, he managed the chase with clarity — rotating strike, absorbing pressure and accelerating at the right moments. A key over against Nitish Kumar Reddy swung the equation firmly Punjab’s way.

Iyer’s composed half-century ensured there were no late stumbles, before Shashank fittingly applied the finishing touches.

The difference

Both teams dominated the Powerplay. The difference lay in what followed.

While SRH lost momentum sharply after their flying start, PBKS sustained pressure throughout. Their middle-overs discipline with the ball and clarity during the chase turned a daunting 220 into a controlled pursuit.

It also marked Punjab’s 10th successful chase of a 200-plus total — the most in IPL history — reinforcing their growing identity as one of the league’s most dangerous chasing sides.
