US-Iran war : Netanyahu reportedly alarmed after tense Trump call as Tehran reviews US truce proposal
Iran said on Wednesday it was reviewing a new US proposal aimed at easing tensions in the Middle East, while US President Donald Trump suggested negotiations were at a critical stage, warning that diplomacy could quickly give way to tougher measures if talks fail.
Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews near Washington, Trump said discussions were on the “borderline” between a breakthrough and a collapse.
“It’s right on the borderline,” Trump said, adding that if Washington did not receive what it considered satisfactory responses, developments could move “very quickly.”
Iran-US developments | Key points
Talks remain at a sensitive stage: Trump earlier described negotiations as being in their “final stages,” saying an agreement could emerge soon but stressing that Tehran needed to provide “100 per cent good answers.” He also warned that the US could take stronger action if talks break down.
Iran reviewing US proposal: Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said Tehran had received the US position and was examining it. He reiterated Iran’s demands, including access to frozen assets and easing restrictions affecting Iranian trade and ports.
Iran issues warning: Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf accused Washington of escalating tensions through its rhetoric. He warned of a strong response if pressure increased further, while Iran’s Revolutionary Guards signalled that any wider conflict could have consequences beyond the region.
Strait of Hormuz concerns remain: The future of the Strait of Hormuz — a strategic route that handles a significant share of global oil and LNG shipments — remains a major concern. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned that prolonged disruptions in the area could have broader effects on global food and energy prices.
Pakistan continues mediation efforts: Pakistan Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi reportedly travelled to Tehran again this week as diplomatic efforts continued amid the ongoing negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
