Elbridge Colby is visiting India to meet senior officials in New Delhi, in a pre-scheduled trip that takes on added significance amid the ongoing West Asia crisis.
According to the US Department of War, “Colby travels to India today to engage with senior officials to advance the critical India–US relationship. His visit will focus on implementing the goals set out by President Trump and Prime Minister Modi in their February 2025 joint statement and the Framework for the US–India Major Defense Partnership.”
Sergio Gor welcomed the visit on X, saying, “Looking forward to welcoming Under Secretary of War Elbridge Colby to India!”
This marks Colby’s first official trip to India. He is recognized as a key architect of US defense policy during Trump’s second term. The visit follows closely after high-level engagements by other senior US military leaders, including Indo-Pacific Commander Admiral Samuel Paparo and US Space Command chief General Stephen Whiting.
The timing is critical as the West Asia conflict has disrupted supply lines of crude oil, gas, and fertilizers, affecting India and other Asian nations. The visit underscores efforts by New Delhi and Washington to strengthen bilateral relations following previous tensions related to trade disputes, the May India–Pakistan conflict, and India’s procurement of Russian energy.
Meanwhile, Narendra Modi stated that India’s diplomatic role has been to urge de-escalation in the region. He condemned attacks on commercial vessels and blockages of international waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz, calling them “unacceptable,” and confirmed ongoing discussions with West Asian leaders to end the conflict.
