Trump Slams Nobel Peace Prize Decision, Says Snub Has Left ‘Indelible Stain’ on Norway
US President Donald Trump on Friday renewed his criticism over being overlooked for the Nobel Peace Prize, describing the decision as disgraceful and embarrassing and claiming it had left an “indelible stain” on Norway, home to the committee responsible for selecting the laureate.
Trump’s remarks came hours after the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced this year’s award for Navi Pillay, a former International Criminal Court judge who oversaw a United Nations report concluding that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza.
Speaking at a rally in Syracuse, New York, Trump dismissed Pillay as an unfamiliar figure, questioning her recognition with the prestigious honour.
“I never heard of the person. Nobody did,” Trump said, referring to Pillay as a “mystery person”.
Throughout his presidency, Trump has repeatedly voiced frustration over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, arguing that his diplomatic efforts and role in international conflict resolution deserved recognition.
During Friday’s speech, he cited several international disputes that he claimed to have helped resolve or prevent, including tensions involving North and South Korea, Japan and North Korea, and China and Taiwan. However, he did not provide evidence to substantiate those claims.
“This is an indelible stain on the country of Norway and those people that made such a disgraceful and embarrassing decision,” Trump said.
He also questioned the credibility of the Nobel Peace Prize, accusing those responsible for the decision of political bias.
“The Nobel Peace Prize has been forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democracy and really enemies of civilization. And we will not forget, Norway,” he added.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee independently selects the Peace Prize recipient. Although the award is presented in Norway, the committee’s decision is separate from that of the Norwegian government.
