Weather Today: IMD Warns of Heatwave in Coastal Andhra, Heavy Rain Across Several States
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a mix of extreme weather conditions across the country on Sunday, with isolated heatwave conditions likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, while an active southwest monsoon is set to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to several parts of north, east and northeast India.
Heavy Rain Alert for Multiple States
According to the IMD, Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall during the day.
Heavy showers are also likely in Arunachal Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, raising the possibility of waterlogging, flash floods and travel disruptions in vulnerable areas.
Heatwave to Persist in Coastal Andhra
Even as the monsoon remains active across much of the country, the IMD has warned of heatwave conditions in isolated pockets of Coastal Andhra Pradesh. The forecast reflects the uneven distribution of monsoon rainfall, with some regions continuing to experience above-normal temperatures despite the rainy season.
Monsoon Activity to Stay Strong
The weather department said the southwest monsoon is likely to remain active over the Himalayan region, eastern India and the Northeast over the next few days.
Widespread rainfall is expected across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Konkan and Goa, Coastal Karnataka and Uttarakhand, with intermittent heavy spells forecast through the week.
Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Expected
The IMD has also issued alerts for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph over Andaman and Nicobar Islands, East Madhya Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Jharkhand.
In addition, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha and West Madhya Pradesh are likely to experience gusty winds of 30-40 kmph, while thunderstorms with lightning are also expected over parts of Bihar, Uttarakhand and the northeastern states.
Residents Advised to Stay Alert
The IMD has advised people in both rain-affected and heat-affected regions to keep track of the latest weather updates and follow local advisories. While residents in heavy rainfall areas should remain cautious of flooding and traffic disruptions, those in heatwave-hit regions are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
