Mahua Moitra’s Remarks On Suvendu Adhikari Trigger Debate In Bengal Political Circles

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has found herself at the centre of political discussion after speaking about the support she received from BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari during their time together in the Trinamool Congress.

In an interview with the BBC, Moitra reflected on her early years in politics and recalled Adhikari’s role in encouraging and supporting her during key moments of her political journey. Her comments quickly drew attention given the sharp political rivalry between the TMC and the BJP in West Bengal.

“At a personal level, I have had a very good relationship with Suvendu Adhikari. When we were in the TMC together, he supported me a lot,” Moitra said.

Recalling Difficult Moments

The Krishnanagar MP recounted her disappointment during the run-up to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections when she did not receive a party ticket despite expecting one. According to Moitra, Adhikari was among the leaders who stood by her during that period.

“In 2014, I was supposed to get a Lok Sabha ticket, but I did not get it. I cried the whole night. At that time, Suvendu was there to reassure me,” she said. Moitra also remembered her first Assembly election campaign from Karimpur in 2016, saying Adhikari played an important role in helping launch her campaign.

“When I first contested from Karimpur, no one came to campaign for me. The first rally was done by Suvendu Adhikari. Even today, you can see the pictures,” she said.

Social Media Clarification

As excerpts from the interview circulated online, speculation grew over the political implications of her remarks. Moitra later clarified that her comments referred solely to her relationship with Adhikari when both were members of the Trinamool Congress.

Responding to a user on X, she said portions of the interview had been selectively highlighted and did not reflect the broader context of her remarks. She added that while she had maintained a good relationship with Adhikari during his years in the TMC, she had not been in touch with him since his departure from the party.

Former Allies, Present Rivals

Adhikari was once regarded as one of the Trinamool Congress’s most influential leaders before exiting the party in 2020 and joining the BJP. His move marked one of the most significant political shifts in West Bengal in recent years.

Since then, he has become a leading face of the BJP in the state and one of Mamata Banerjee’s most vocal critics, turning a former intra-party relationship into a political rivalry.

Political Attention Around The Remarks

While Moitra’s comments were largely personal in nature, they generated interest because of the current political climate in West Bengal and the long-standing contest between the TMC and BJP.

Her remarks offered a rare look back at the period when several of Bengal’s current political rivals worked together within the same party, highlighting personal equations that existed before political loyalties changed.
