Gukesh to Face Sindarov in World Chess Championship Title Defence in Geneva
Reigning World Champion D Gukesh will defend his crown against Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov in the 2026 FIDE World Chess Championship, scheduled to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from November 25 to December 15, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) announced on Tuesday.
The match will feature the two youngest stars in world chess, with both players set to be 20 years old when the championship begins. It will also be the youngest World Championship match in history, highlighting the emergence of a new generation at the top of the sport.
The title will be decided over 14 classical games, with the first player to score 7.5 points being crowned World Champion. If the contest ends level at 7-7, the winner will be determined through tie-break games. FIDE Interim President Viswanathan Anand said Geneva was chosen after receiving hosting bids from multiple countries, including India, the United States and Cyprus.
“Several countries expressed a strong interest in hosting the FIDE World Championship Match, including India, the United States and Cyprus. “After carefully considering all the proposals, FIDE has decided to stage the match on neutral soil and bring it to Geneva, a city with a historic tradition of bringing nations and cultures together.
“We look forward to welcoming the global chess community to Switzerland. Local chess fans will have the opportunity to experience world-class chess in person, while millions around the globe can follow the battle online as the duel for the highest title in chess unfolds.”
Gukesh earned his place in history by defeating China’s Ding Liren in Singapore in December 2024 to become the youngest-ever World Chess Champion at just 18 years of age. Sindarov booked his spot in the championship by winning the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament in Cyprus, finishing first with a round to spare. The Uzbek Grandmaster has rapidly established himself among the world’s elite after also capturing the 2025 FIDE World Cup title.
With two of chess’s brightest young Grandmasters set to battle for the sport’s biggest prize, the Geneva title match promises to usher in a new chapter in the game’s history.
