10,000-km Rain Band Captured From India to South Korea as Monsoon Enters Powerful Phase
A spectacular 7,000-10,000-km-long rain band stretching from northern India across the Himalayas and China to South Korea has been spotted in the latest satellite imagery, offering a striking view of the southwest monsoon at its most active.
The massive cloud formation, known as the monsoon convergence zone, has developed as moisture-rich winds from the Indian Ocean combine with atmospheric systems over Asia. The interaction has created an almost continuous corridor of thick clouds and rain spanning thousands of kilometres.
The weather pattern has unleashed one of the strongest spells of the season across India. Over the last two days, the country received 170-180% of its normal daily monsoon rainfall, making it the wettest period of the 2026 monsoon so far.
Meteorologists say the active monsoon trough has intensified rainfall over large parts of the country, with precipitation running well above normal in several states.
Satellite images show dense cloud cover stretching across central, northern and eastern India before extending over the Himalayan region into China and further towards the Korean Peninsula, illustrating the vast reach of the Asian monsoon system.
Such expansive cloud bands form when the monsoon trough remains active, pulling warm, moisture-laden air into a broad zone where it rises, cools and condenses into towering thunderclouds. The process fuels widespread rain and thunderstorms across multiple countries simultaneously.
The latest spell has come as a major relief after an uneven start to the monsoon season that left several regions with rainfall deficits. The widespread showers are expected to improve seasonal rainfall figures and strengthen water availability across north and central India.
Heavy rain has already affected Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and several eastern and northeastern states, where low-pressure systems from the Bay of Bengal continue to enhance rainfall activity.
However, the intense weather has also increased the risk of flash floods, waterlogging, landslides and rising river levels, especially in the Himalayan states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, prompting authorities to remain on alert.
The extraordinary satellite image also highlights the interconnected nature of Asia’s weather systems. While often viewed as an India-centric phenomenon, the southwest monsoon is part of a continent-wide circulation that influences weather from the Arabian Sea through the Himalayas to East Asia.
Forecasters expect the monsoon to remain active over the coming days, bringing more widespread rainfall that could significantly reduce India’s seasonal rainfall deficit, replenish reservoirs and provide a timely boost to the ongoing kharif crop season.
