An avalanche struck Nepal’s Himlung Himal in the Manang district, leaving 14 people missing, while at least two bodies have been recovered from the site, according to The Kathmandu Post.
The avalanche hit the 7,126-metre mountain in the Nar Phu region, where climbers and expedition support staff were present. The missing group reportedly includes both mountaineers and support personnel.
Rishi Bhandari, general secretary of the Expedition Operators Association Nepal, confirmed the incident. He said two of the missing people were associated with Imagine Nepal Pvt Ltd, while the remaining eight were linked to Himalayan Holidays Nepal.
Nepal’s Department of Tourism is monitoring the situation as authorities work to establish the full details of the incident and coordinate search and rescue efforts.
Ram Krishna Lamichhane, director general of the Department of Tourism, said officials were gathering information on the ground and assessing the situation in the affected area.
The avalanche occurred amid warnings of heightened risks in Nepal’s high-altitude districts. Authorities have been cautioning about possible avalanches and flash floods since September 22 as heavy snowfall and persistent rain continued across mountainous areas.
The incident comes only weeks after a major avalanche-triggered flash flood in Nepal’s Rasuwa district, which reportedly claimed nearly 1,400 lives, adding to concerns over the growing risks faced by communities and expeditions in the country’s mountainous regions.
