India delivered a dominant performance at the Women’s Hockey World Cup, defeating South Africa 6-1 to record their biggest-ever win in the tournament and move closer to securing a place in the second round.

Sunelita Toppo, Navneet Kaur, Sushila Chanu, Deepika, Lalremsiami and Sakshi Rana scored for India as the team collected three points and climbed to the top of Group D.

China’s 4-2 win over England kept them second in the group. India and China had earlier played out a 2-2 draw, meaning India’s final pool match against England on August 20 will be crucial. India need only a point to guarantee qualification.

India Show Attacking Intent

The emphatic victory will boost confidence in the Indian camp, with the team displaying both attacking quality and depth. India’s previous biggest World Cup win was a 4-1 victory over Spain in 1974, when they also reached the semi-finals. The team has not returned to the last four since then.

India began strongly against South Africa, creating an opportunity through Lalremsiami as early as the second minute. South Africa responded with counter-attacks, with Kayla de Waal breaking through before Bichu Devi produced an important save.

India continued to press and took the lead in the 11th minute. A well-placed pass opened up the South African defence, allowing Sunelita Toppo to tap the ball home. Navneet Kaur doubled India’s advantage early in the second quarter. From a penalty corner, she used a clever movement before finding the net.

India continued to apply pressure and earned another penalty corner. Navneet’s attempt was recycled, with Sushila Chanu eventually getting the final touch to make it 3-0. The result reflected India’s blend of experienced players and emerging talent. Navneet pointed out that 11 members of the squad were playing at the World Cup for the first time.

Goals Continue After Break

India maintained their attacking approach after half-time, spending long periods inside the South African half. The statistics underlined their dominance, with India enjoying 51.6% possession, registering 16 shots on target and making 25 circle penetrations. They converted two of their six penalty corners.

Deepika extended the lead in the 38th minute with a powerful tomahawk strike. Lalremsiami then made it 5-0 in the 44th minute after receiving a long pass from Neha and finishing past the South African goalkeeper. Sakshi Rana added another goal just a minute later. She pounced on a loose ball following an attacking move and fired a reverse shot into the top corner.

South Africa managed a consolation goal through De Waal from a penalty corner, but India’s victory was already secured.

The result leaves India in a strong position ahead of their final Group D fixture against England on August 20. A draw will be enough to take them into the second round, while the team’s emphatic win has also strengthened hopes of a deep run in the tournament.
